Reflect

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV)

You’re probably reading this devo on your phone, maybe a computer or tablet. That’s an incredibly intricate device that was intentionally designed and created. You might have looked at all the specifications and details of the device before you bought it. Even now, I’m sure you could read all about the battery, processor, and every other component inside. Yet, if there was something wrong inside, would you even know where to begin? You could read every manual, but if you pulled your device apart, there would be so much complexity and detail. Would you even know what to do with it? There are probably parts soldered together; others not even visible to the naked eye. Yet, someone with a complete understanding and the right tools knows exactly what they are looking at and even how to fix what’s broken.

There is so much in life that we can know all types of head knowledge, specifications, details, and information about, without knowing anything meaningful. I could read a biography of my spouse, memorize a list of information about her, or study her social media profile and never know her. I could study the repair manual for my truck and never be able to actually fix what’s broken on it.  I could ask ChatGPT, check WebMD, even get a college degree, and still not have the intimate understanding of something in a way that actually changes anything for anyone.

Even the same could be said of the Bible. We could memorize every last word in every translation, know the languages written in the original manuscripts, and be able to recite every word, yet if it doesn’t change things for us, bring forth an understanding of the truth of who God is and guide us to become more like Jesus as we draw nearer to him, then does any of it really matter? We might appear impressive to others. Some might be fooled by an apparent moral superiority, but none of that matters if we are still the same mess on the inside that Jesus bore the cross to redeem.

So, what am I saying – that the Bible doesn’t really matter? No, quite the opposite. I think what we are reading here in today's Scripture is actually an assertion that the Word of God is so much deeper, richer, relevant, and important than we often realize. Because the Word of God is not just some book that’s laying on a shelf. Its words are written in the books of your Bible and in the sound of your audio Bible, but so much more real than the ink used on those pages, is the way that the Holy Spirit illuminates God’s Word to us.

The Word of God is alive and at work. It is one of the ways that he speaks to us. It is so precise, detailed, and accurate that truth and clarity are revealed – even in that which seems indistinguishable. It is useful for teaching, for reproof, correction, training for righteousness, and equipping (2 Timothy 3).

As the book of Hebrews speaks of the truth of who God is and who he calls us to be, we are reminded that nothing in creation is hidden from God. We are not meant to just look different from the outside. He wants to transform us fully, which starts on the inside and is why Jesus speaks so much about the posture of our hearts. If God’s Word is alive and active in our lives, we should be changed. Not by behavior modification but by the transformative work of God’s Spirit in us. Even the pieces of us that feel inseparable will be sorted out to remove what’s not needed and replaced with what he always intended for us.

Connect

I want to invite you to start something with me this week. Ask God how he wants his Word to be alive and active in you. Here are a few practical steps to do this:

Pray - Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Word of God for you today.

Commit - Decide to open your heart so that you can hear what He is saying to you and to apply that in your life.

Discuss - Share with your small group what you are hearing and ask how God is speaking to them.

Live - Don’t just add what you learned to your mental library, let it draw you closer to Jesus and to living on mission for those he wants to reach through you.
