Reflect

Isn’t it obvious that all angels are sent to help out with those lined up to receive salvation? (Hebrews 1:14 MSG)

The question mark at the end of this verse in the Message version got my attention. Is it obvious to you that angels are sent by God to help out those lined up to receive salvation? Until a few years ago, thinking intently or at great length about angels was not something that I remember doing.

On January 29, 2023, though, I had a traumatic accident that made them obvious to me! The snowmachine that I was driving fishtailed into a parked truck on a frozen lake. I only have a few memories of the moments before or immediately after, and I do not remember any sounds or pain upon impact, but I do remember seeing a WHITE truck as I fishtailed. While at the hospital, I kept telling my husband that I had hit a white truck. A few days later, he showed me a photo of the truck that I hit. It was very BLACK! In my memories, that truck is still white, and I will emphatically tell you that those were my angels helping me. My life was saved by my helmet and my angels! There is seldom a day that I do not think about “my angels,” so it is obvious to me that God made angels! “My angels” constantly remind me of God’s protection and help.

The superiority of Jesus over the prophets and angels is the theme of the first chapter of Hebrews, giving descriptions and characteristics of angels, too. We know that God created angels since He created everything (Heb. 1:2). Jesus ranks above angels (Heb. 1:4), and they must worship Him (Heb. 1:6). This chapter also states that God sends angels as His servants to carry out His commands (Heb. 1:7), and they are swift spirits without bodies sent to serve Christians (Heb. 1:14).

The Bible is full of references about angels. In Daniel 6:22, God sent an angel to close the mouth of the lions before they could eat Daniel! While Daniel is praying for the restoration of Jerusalem, the angel Gabriel takes on a human form to answer this prayer Dan. 9:20-27. After Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness, angels took care of Him (Matt. 4:11). On the Mount of Olives, when Jesus was praying just before His arrest, God immediately sent an angel to strengthen Him (Luke 22:43). Take some time to explore more of these references for more evidence of how God uses them to care for us.

I believe God commanded “my angels” to protect and care for me in a very swift manner! When I think of angels now, I see evidence of them throughout my life helping and protecting me, but I did not realize their unique presence until my accident. After seeing “my angels,” they are more than obvious to me and an overwhelming confirmation of God’s incomparable care and closeness to us. What is more, telling “my angels” story to others has opened doors for me to share Jesus!

Connect

While reading this chapter, one can feel the all-encompassing love that the Father has for His Son. The descriptions of Jesus are full and rich, while exclaiming His equality to His Father! Accepting Jesus as your Savior, who paid the price for your sin, is the ultimate gift from God, but getting angels after salvation is a great benefit!

The ways that angels can help us is endless! Angels can lift us to our feet when our souls have forgotten how to fly for Him. May you look for angels in your life, that they would be obvious to you and confirm God’s loving care for you! Share your stories with others!
