On my journey with God, I have learned that a rhythm of reflecting on what God has been doing around me is a great way to experience joy and also to find other opportunities to see where he is calling me. God has blessed me with many opportunities to lead people at home, in his church, and at work. I spend a lot of my time in each of these areas, and it's very important to me that the time spent there is honoring to God.
Specifically at work, I have seen God show up through prayer with multiple people. One employee recently asked for prayer ahead of a doctor appointment, one accepted the opportunity for prayer for their family's health during their first birth (even though they aren't Christian), and one offered to pray for me ahead of a recent surgery I had because they knew I would appreciate it. I believe God has worked through me in this capacity because I was willing to be unashamed of his influence in my life around others, choosing to love people in a way that looks different than the world. One example – a relationship with one of these coworkers was developed over a few months, meeting up periodically with them for technical mentoring, which had always had a portion devoted to talking about what God is doing in each of our lives. Loving the people around us like God teaches us to as Christians is a great way to see God work through us.
The most challenging and rewarding relationship I've had at work recently came in the form of a new manager that had a primary style best described as micromanagement. I chose a path of building trust with them by looking very different than every other work relationship they had experienced up to that point. The first few months were very rocky, and I was constantly asking God to show me why I was put in that situation because it made no sense. It honestly felt more like some sort of punishment. I was ultimately led by God and my Christian community around me to simply choose love. I chose to see the manager as a person that God created first. I chose to provide direct feedback but given in a way in which they surely felt the love for them in it. I began to notice other leaders (both Christian and not) around him coming to me, wondering how I was able build trust with him. I got to share with them how I saw that manager as someone who just wants to be seen and loved. I explained that when I separate the sin from the person, I am more easily able to honor and treat them as a valuable person that God loves, regardless of their behaviors or sins they live out. These people went on to change their behaviors and successfully build trust of their own with the manager. Toward the end of the manager's time in the role, it was common to have them ask advice from me about how to handle situations with people in ways that cared for them. The micromanagement tendencies never fully went away, but they greatly diminished due to the trust that had been built. I ultimately got to see God working in us and multiplying the way God loves people in the people around us, bringing a little bit of joy and heaven to the office.
My most recent experience with God at the office ends in a baptism! Because I live unashamed to be known as a follower of Jesus at the office, I have had other people from other churches seek me out for discussion or to help others. One of these people I've grown with through a technical mentorship has a friend that was considering Christianity and had been checking out ACF. That friend and I connected over coffee, had a great conversation about why I follow Jesus, discussed what I see God doing around me, the real reason I choose to walk in the door at work each day, and ultimately what being a follower of Jesus and baptism is. Long story short, they asked me to baptize them at ACF soon after they were saved, and they now are part of our life group, surrounded by people that encourage continued growth with Jesus! You never know what part of someone's journey you'll get to be a part of if you simply choose to follow wherever God takes you.
I believe I have seen God work in many ways around me because I choose: to follow him, to be known to bring him with me outside of the church (even though I'm sometimes not the best example of him), to reflect on what he's doing around me, to read his Word in community so I can better understand him, and to be available to serve in any capacity I see him calling me into. I'm confident that God will do this for you or anyone who chooses to walk the path God puts in front of them, being unafraid to be known as a dedicated follower of Jesus. There is joy to be found in obedience.
