Reflect

A few weeks ago, when Angela gave the message, she mentioned children asking if snacks would be served in church. They were referring to communion! Can’t you just see the little tykes preparing  for the cup and bread like it’s some kind of Goldfish break complete with juice box?!

At such a young age, this is a cute story, full of innocence and from a pure heart. What else is there to do at such a young age in a slow-moving adult environment except look forward to munchies! But what happens when we, as adults, continue to step into sacred moments as children, not recognizing that the God of the Universe is there?

How would my life and your life look different if we treated each moment as a sacred moment with our Abba?

Driving down the Glenn, sacred.

Sitting in the office, sacred.

Laundering little clothes, sacred.

Not because these particular acts are anything special, but because Jesus is there.

Think about communion: Our verse today is a part of that holy scene so many years ago. Jesus is speaking to his disciples. These words, the reflection that should take place when we participate in this…It is a sacred time that we as a church set apart in an effort to seek his  presence. It is a time to deeply appreciate Jesus giving his life in exchange for ours without distraction. What if in our hearts and minds we could hold every moment  suspended in holiness, like we do communion? What if we could abide in Jesus through our daily communion with him?

There is another name for communion that our Catholic brothers and sisters use - Eucharist (yook a rest). It comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” It is the giving of thanks for the life, death, resurrection and abiding presence of Christ.

Connect

If Christ is abiding with me, which he is, and I am abiding with him, inconsistently and imperfectly, shouldn’t I acknowledge his presence more than once a month or even once a week? Shouldn’t I, and you, be observing eucharist daily? Hourly? “Momently”?

“Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things” (Phil. 3:19 NIV).

This is how we operate in the world, our minds set on the physical, forgetting about heavenly things. Are we missing sacred moments with Jesus and treating them as snack time? What sweet communion are we trading while we fixate on the world and fail to embrace our King?

Let's put some reminders on our phones, not only for meetings and our to-do lists, but for sacred time with Jesus. Post-It notes, alarms, whatever we need to bring the focus back to where it rightfully belongs. Abide in eucharist this week. Give thanks for the life, death, resurrection, and most of all, his abiding presence with you. Every moment is sacred because he is with you.

Immanuel, we praise you for your presence and strive to abide with you daily. Help us when we get so caught up with this world that we forget to abide in you and treat our days as anything but sacred. Remind us that you sacrificed yourself so your Spirit can be with us now, and we can be with you forever. We can never take that for granted. Keep a sense of wonder in communion with you in us so that we can always be blessed with the reality of your holy companionship. Amen.
