Happy Father's Day, ACF! And in fact, if you're a dad, you may be familiar with the book, The Little Engine that Could, or maybe you grew up reading this classic children's book. Perhaps the iconic line immediately popped into your head just now: I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.
As we wrap up our study of Romans 4 this week, though, maybe you have been reminded that, when it comes to our relationship with God, no amount of "I think I can" could propel us up and over the mountain of our sin. Only by Jesus' work on the cross are we made right with God. Truly, we can't. But HE can - and did!
Today, spend the next few moments in prayer, reflecting on this idea of "I think I can" as it relates to your faith. Where are you just trying to muscle out your own goodness by "believing in yourself" - as the Disney movies teach? We can chant "I think I'm good, I think I'm good..." as many times as we want, but it will never change the fact that our own efforts are utterly insufficient to make us right before a Holy and Righteous God.
If you realize you've been leaning on your own efforts in an area of your life, confess that to God today and ask him to change your heart. Instead of "I think I can," may the cry of our heart be "I know he has" - He has made me right, saved me, and covered it all by his grace. Thank you, Jesus!
