Reflect

6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises (Hebrews 8:6 ESV).

One of the most dangerous parts of drifting is that it rarely feels dangerous.

No one wakes up one morning with an explicit intention to drift away from God. It just happens gradually. We start seeking things like security, fulfillment, identity, and peace elsewhere. We convince ourselves that if we just had maybe a little bit more success, more money, a better relationship, or more control over our lives, we might finally feel satisfied.

The world offers countless saviors. Success promises significance, money promises security. Relationships promise completeness or fullness. Achievement promises purpose. These things all tell us, “If you have me, you’ll finally have enough.” But every single one of those promises eventually falls short. Hebrews 8 is a beautiful reminder that God already knew our greatest need, and it wasn’t a better system or set of rules – it was a better Savior.

The author explains that the old covenant pointed people toward God, but it could never fully restore what sin broke in the world and in us. It revealed humanity's need, but it couldn't completely satisfy it. So God, in his amazing mercy, established a new covenant through Jesus Christ – a covenant founded on a better, true promise.

This promise is better because it does not depend on our ability to earn God's favor. It depends entirely on Christ's finished work. Through Jesus, forgiveness is complete. Grace is freely given. The relationship between God and his people is restored.

And that's what makes Jesus unlike anything this world has to offer.

The world can offer temporary happiness, but Jesus offers lasting joy. The world can offer moments of satisfaction, but Jesus offers true fulfillment. The world can give us these things to enjoy, but it can never give us the completeness our hearts were created for.

Only Christ can.

In him, we are fully known and fully loved. We are forgiven – not because we've finally measured up, but because he has already accomplished what we could not. We no longer have to spend our lives searching for identity, approval, or acceptance. In Christ, we have already been given all of it.

When we drift from Jesus, we don’t just move away from spiritual disciplines. We begin to believe that something else can satisfy us more than he can. We start to replace the only Savior who can make us whole with substitutes that were never meant to carry the weight of our souls. Jesus doesn't simply improve your life – he completes it.

The invitation of the new covenant isn't to just know about God, but to know him personally. It’s to give us rest instead of striving, to stop chasing fulfillment in temporary things and instead discover that everything we’ve ever been looking for has always been found in Christ. Every day we have a choice. We can anchor ourselves to the better promise of Christ, or we can continue drifting toward promises that can never truly satisfy. One leaves us constantly searching, while the other reminds us that in Christ, we are already home.

Connect

Drifting often starts when we place our hope in something other than Christ. Spend a few moments reflecting honestly on where your heart has been resting.

  • Where have you been looking for fulfillment, identity, or security outside of Christ?
  • Are there “better promises” from the world that you've begun believing more than God’s promises?
  • What is one area where God is inviting you to stop striving and simply rest in what Christ has already accomplished?
  • What practical step can you take this week to intentionally draw near to Jesus instead of drifting towards substitutes?

God, thank you for knowing exactly what I needed before I ever realized it myself. Thank you for sending Jesus to establish a better covenant, built on better promises. Forgive me for the times I’ve searched for fulfillment in things that can never satisfy. Remind me that my identity, my purpose, my security, and my hope are all found in Christ alone.
