Micah 5:2

Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are too little to be among the family groups of Judah. But from you One will come who will rule for Me in Israel. His coming was planned long ago, from the beginning. (NLV)

Reflect

How many promises are in the Bible? I thought this would be easy to answer, but I was wrong! DL Moody wrote in his book, Prevailing Prayer, “The Bible is packed with so many promises it is hard to count them!” My Internet searches produced a big range of answers, from 3,000 to 30,000. Dr. Everett R. Storms, a teacher from Ontario, decided to count the promises during his 27th reading of the Bible. After a year and a half of reading, he reported 8,810 promises! Wow!

Detailed information triggers my God-given curiosity, but I am even more intrigued by the details that become “aha moments,” or “God-winks,” for me. One of my favorite morning prayers is Psalm 37:23-24, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall for the Lord holds them by the hand” (NLT). When I see Him directing my every step, I notice the delights and winks that remind me of His promises that I pray!

Recently, my sister and I were stumbling after getting an abrupt notice that we had to find a new home for our mom who has dementia and had moved only three months earlier. There were tears and lots of prayers, but many God-winks in the coming days as God took care of every detail and directed every step. We got this notice on a Thursday afternoon, which is the day my ladies’ Bible study meets. Just as I arrived, my sister called and shared a God-wink with me: She went for a walk and saw a former neighbor who had been an Advocate for Elder Care and received some great advice. Then, the ladies in my group prayed over me, claiming many of God’s promises and prepping the way before me. God promises to go before us and to be with us (Deut. 31:8). I went home and suddenly had the strength to move forth in the plans that needed to be made! Promise-Wink!

Friday morning, while reading Isaiah 43:1-2, God reminded me to not fear the floods and fires of life because I am His. The conversation that I had with my sister later that day was more hopeful than the earlier ones due to a probable new home for Mom! Promise-Wink! My flight left at 5am on Saturday, and I landed in Portland, but my next flight was delayed. During that delay, I read the ACF daily devotion, so I reached out to the Devo Team to pray for a smooth trip. My flight left only an hour late, which is amazing with the current airport issues.

But the winks didn’t stop there! While moving Mom, we had many confirmations of Him directing our steps. After a “random” coincidence from an acquaintance, we had more peace about her new home. In a very sad moment for me, a member of my small group left a voicemail saying that she was praying. Then, one of Mom’s favorite hymns was being sung as we moved her in. The move was smooth, and Mom was immediately comfortable. We knew God was with us as He had promised!

Just as I saw God’s promises at play throughout my week of daily problems, we also see God’s promise-keeping on full display in today’s small, yet significant passage. I discovered that there are at least 8,810 promises in the Bible with pledges and details from God, of which this is only one! I am sure that I have typically glanced over today’s verse, knowing it’s a fulfilled promise, but then, I realized that Jesus was born 800 years after the book of Micah was written. God was revealing details of Jesus’ birth and destiny long before He was born. What is more, there are two villages named Bethlehem in the Bible; one is in Judah, and one is in Galilee. In today’s verse, God reveals the exact one, Bethlehem Ephrathah, from where the ruler will come!  God is in the details! Promise-Wink!

Maybe you are not a person who is curious about details, but maybe you will look for some! What promises will you pray today? Would you feel less anxious if you claimed God’s promise to direct your steps? My prayer is that every day you find God-winks that remind you of His promises. Look for them and share them with others!
