One of the greatest blessings the Lord gives us is the ability to learn from one another. There is much wisdom to be found in listening and learning alongside the people God has placed in our lives. Wisdom is not something we are supposed to keep to ourselves – it is meant to be shared. In Proverbs 4, we see a beautiful picture of wisdom being passed from one generation to the next. The writer recalls instructions he received from his own father, who encouraged him to hold fast to his teachings, pursue understanding, and treasure wisdom above everything else. They were words intended to shape the direction of his heart, and the way he would live.
Notice something important: The wisdom being shared was first received. The writer had to be willing to listen and learn from the generation before him before he could instruct another. Wisdom was passed down because someone valued it enough to teach it and someone else valued it enough to learn it.
We live in a world that encourages independence—but while personal growth is important, we were never intended to navigate this life without guidance. God has surrounded us with people who can encourage us, challenge us, and point us back to him. The goal isn’t just to raise children who know how to make good decisions, follow rules, or behave appropriately—-it’s to raise a generation with hearts that genuinely desire God. We want them to know about his commandments, but also understand the goodness of the One who gave them. We want them to pursue righteousness because they love the Lord and desire to honor him. There is a difference between teaching someone what is right and helping them understand why God‘s ways are good. A heart that loves the Lord will desire to pursue his wisdom even when no one is watching. That’s why the instruction in Proverbs 4 is so significant. The father doesn’t merely tell his son to acknowledge wisdom. He wants his son to recognize its value and pursue it for himself. Isn’t that what we should desire for the generations that come after us? Not that they just inherit our traditions or repeat what they’ve been taught, but they develop a genuine relationship with the Lord.
We must also always be open to teaching. Wisdom is a two-way street between generations. Those who have walked with the Lord for many years have experiences and understanding that is worth being shared. Those who may be younger in their walk with Christ have opportunities to listen, ask questions, and grow. No matter what age you are, you never reach a point where we no longer need God’s instructions. We should never be so confident in our own understanding that we stop listening to the wisdom of others.
Imagine what could happen if we approached our relationships with that kind of intentionality. If older generations took seriously the responsibility of showing God’s goodness, and younger generations sought to understand it. If we weren’t merely concerned with producing good behavior, but cultivating hearts that love the Lord.
So, treasure the wisdom of the Lord. Seek it wholeheartedly. Allow it to transform the way you live, and be intentional about sharing it with those around you.
The greatest thing we can pass on to the next generation isn’t simply the knowledge of how to live well—it’s a heart that desires to walk with God.
The pursuit of wisdom requires both humility and intentionality. We must be willing to receive guidance from others while also recognizing our responsibility to share what the Lord has taught us. Take a moment to consider how God might be inviting you to participate in this exchange of wisdom.
Ask God to reveal opportunities for you to grow in wisdom and to share his truth with those around you. Sometimes the greatest thing we can do for someone is show them what it looks like to faithfully pursue the Lord.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your wisdom and the people you have placed in my life to guide, encourage, and teach me. Give me a heart to seek you above all else. Help me to remain humble and willing to receive instruction, recognizing that I will always have more to learn. Teach me to treasure your Word and to pursue understanding that draws me closer to you. Give me opportunities to share what you have taught me and help me to be an example of your goodness and faithfulness. May the generations that follow not only know of you, but genuinely love you and desire to walk in your ways. Let my life be a testimony of your wisdom and use me to point others toward you. Amen.
