Reflections Week: Thinking Back

Good morning, friend. You know that hazy time of year between Christmas and New Year’s, when you’re not quite sure what day it is, or why you would care what day it is? Yes, here we are - Welcome to Reflections Week with ACF Devos. We’re taking a pause this week to ruminate on all that has been and to look ahead toward all that this coming year might hold.

The psalmist reminds us of the importance of taking time to remember the ways God has worked in our lives thus far. Watch how he wrestles in Psalm 77:10-12:

“And I said, ‘This is my fate;

   the Most High has turned his hand against me.’

But then I recall all you have done, O Lord;

   I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.

They are constantly in my thoughts.

   I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works” (NLT).

Looking back matters - because it rightly frames the character of our God in view of the whole scope of our experience with him, not just the present moment - which might be great, or it might be really tough.

So as we embark on this week of reflection as we ring in the new year, let’s take today to ask a question inspired by St. Ignatius’ prayer of examen:

This year, God, where did I feel close to you? And then, God, where did I feel distant?

Psalm 145:18 says, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth” (NIV). Draw near to the Lord with this honest, open-hearted prayer, and allow him to draw near to you.

As you listen and talk with God about the close moments or seasons, thank him! And as you listen and talk about the distant moments or seasons, allow the grace of Jesus to fill those gaps, not the enemy’s lies that whisper shame. Remember, for those who are in Christ, the voice of the Holy Spirit speaks compassion and conviction, never condemnation (Rom. 8:1).

Consider setting a 5+ minute timer to help you sit in this question with God for a bit right now without rushing on with your day. I pray blessings over your prayer time with the Lord today - Amen.
